Million dollar speakers: Start saving

milliondollarspeakers.jpg

How much did you spend on your last pair of speakers? $500, maybe? $5,000 if you're really serious about home theater, I suppose. And hey, don't crazy audiophiles spend tens of thousands of dollars on speakers? That's just nuts.

Well, it couldn't get much crazier than that, right? Wrong! These speakers cost… (cue Dr. Evil voice) one million dollars! Yes, the "Grand Enigma" is the world's most expensive speaker, and I'm pretty sure there's no way it's worth it. Seriously, at that price do the specs even matter? You're paying for the luxury of owning something unique (there's only one set in existence) and expensive. Give me a break. I'll stick to my $50 computer speakers, thanks very much.

Just imagine listening to a really well made LP on, say Andy Payor's Rockport System III Sirius or a Continuum 'table through a Boulder phono stage and pre-amp! Or, better still, renting an actual 1st-gen master tape!! For that matter, hiring your favorite artists over to play for you and your bride &/or a few close friends. Heck, if your home, cars, children's private school, and retirement are all squared away, and you've given four or five mill to Church and charity; and they sound that much more convincing than Dave Wilson's Alexandrias, I say go for it.

How about hiring an actual band, instead? Cheaper AND supports a load of local families in the community.

Get rid of Adam Frucci. Anybody who think $50 computer speakers are just fine for serious music listening shouldn't be "reviewing" speakers.
