Wireless USB has been on the way for a while now, and now it's finally here. The WiRanger Cable Free USB 2.0 Hub from Icron Technologies is the first wireless USB hub to use the familiar 802.11g band used by many Wi-Fi routers, letting you plug in a USB device such as a printer without the need to connect that printer's cable to a PC.
Using Icron's ExtremeUSB technology, you connect one of the WiRanger units to your PC and then you can position the other one at any convenient location. Plug a USB device into that unit, and it hooks up to the PC at Wireless-G speeds. That's not going to be fast enough for some uses normally associated with USB, such as fast hard disk access. But if you're downloading files to a hard drive, that Wireless-G hookup will certainly be faster than your broadband connection.
This tech might see its best benefit with a printer that you'd like to have at a remote location, connected via wireless USB to a PC on your network. But you'll pay dearly for that convenience; this first iteration is $395. Expect prices to drop if this technology becomes more widespread.
