Cheoptics360: a better 3D hologram than R2-D2's

cheoptics

We've seen plenty of crappy holograms out there purporting to be 3D displays, but none of them have really stolen our hearts and made us want one… until now. Cheoptics360 is a big pyramid that projects 3D images in its center, showing video that looks very real floating in midair. Not to piss on the campfire here or anything, but in the video it looks to me like the video is really 2D and is just viewable from any angle. That's not quite 3D, where you would see the back of the object if you walked behind it. Not that this whole setup isn't totally sweet, I'm just sayin'. It's certainly the best looking air-projected image we've seen around these parts, which is good enough in itself for me. Check the video out to judge for yourself after the jump.

please don“t tell me that wene you wrote RD-D2, you were trying to say or refer to R2-D2 is Star Wars

Yah, they are pulling a fast one in the 3D department. Althought, it is a cool feature that the image is viewable from any angle. That would actually make alot of sense, as no one has to be the ones starting at the image's backside. Given what they can do, they may not have even been trying to get a 3-D image instead of the 360 counterpart. I would love to see this inperson. I hope it starts making the rounds at trade shows and concerts.

Its a good start, now all they have to do is record the image from all angles and split the individual projecting side.

Now... If they just scale it down... to fit on a desk... or to replace an entertainment system... Any gamer, any plasma TV owner, anyone who understands or just even LIKES technology will buy it ;D...

Revolutionary! This is the next step towards the future, and the future is NOW! ;D

A 2D image viewable from 360 degrees, pretty sweet if you ask me. Brings me back to the early video games where the trees are only 2D and just rotate to always face you. Creepy.

It almost seems too good to be true. How are they accomplishing this? If it were April 1st, I would dismiss it as a prank.

The implications of this technology are huge for advertising, schools, planetariums, and tech geeks. As a home product, I dunno. It's not going to save you any space and no gamer wants to see through her display.

Thats the one thing about the hologram idea. How could you watch a movie? Particularly a scary movie, where atmosphere is half the content, when all you can see is a semitransparent person?
Id buy one in a heartbeat though. The new intercom system!!! =D Itd be a hit at parties anyway...

I think you're half right. It looks like the film content was a 360 viewable 2d image but some of the CGI looked like the angle changed as the camera rotated around the projection area.
Understandable if you only had a 2D source you build from.

Call me when someone's invented a functional holodeck like on Star Trek. That's what I'm holding out for!

I think that having holograms would be a great idea for music videos if it was done maybe by using differant images of people or something or maybe mix scene ideas.
